About The Good Card

At The Good Card, founder Ashley Baker and her team make greeting cards full of wildflower seeds, with paper made from biodegradable post-consumer waste. This gives greeting cards a second life – planting them in soil, growing flowers that are good for you, and good for the environment. The plantable seed paper cards are eco-friendly forward, make from bio-degradable, post-consumer waste paper and printed with non-toxic ink. Each card is full of a blend of 6 different wildflower seeds, that are all tested for purity, and are non-GMO, and non-invasive.

Challenge

The Good Card was poised to relaunch their ‘Grow Your Card’ kit, after a redesign. The kit includes a plant pot which is 3D printed from plant-based materials and a soil wafer, allowing greeting card receivers to plant their seed-paper greeting cards. To match the new plant-based plant pots, Ashley needed the best packaging services to complement the brand’s color scheme, sustainability values and be of a good quality – and she needed it fast! This would be sitting next to her greeting cards at various Spring tradeshows, in hopes that it would be picked up by various retailers – in addition to her Direct to Consumer business.

Strategy

After initial discussions with The Good Card, it was determined that we needed to make design and production decisions that would allow for quick production while maintaining the sustainability and quality standards that both Knockout and The Good Card share.

Speed – To the Knockout Good Card project completed quickly, we needed to use printing processes that are quick with limited setup, pointing us to digital print for this project. Selecting a paper stock that was readily available allowed us to get samples quickly and produce prototypes for approval without any supply chain delays. Staying flexible during the design process allowed Knockout to move to production quickly and produce the best packaging for The Good Card.

Sustainability & Quality – Keeping sustainability at the forefront of design conversations during the Knockout Good Card project allows us to make decisions that show off the brand’s values. From the color used for print to the paper selected, we were able to showcase The Good Card’s eco-friendly values. From the beginning, Ashley knew she wanted to show off the FSC designation of the paper and we were able to incorporate this into the graphic design process.

Execution

Flexibility: Here at Knockout, we are used to dealing with brands that often need us to be flexible and use creative thinking to meet tight deadlines. In this case, it was determined that the plant pots would not be available for us to build the secondary packaging around. Instead of holding up the design process, we used the manufacturers specifications and added a little extra room. This allowed us to move forward with the design process and get the project into production quickly.

Sustainability: The paper selected was a 130# Smooth Uncoated Cougar stock, this carries the FSC designation and is a strong, quality solution while maintaining the natural look and feel that many brands desire. This paper is excellent for digital print applications, and allowed The Good Card to see a digitally printed print proof on Cougar stock. This gave them absolute clarity on how their colors would look on the final product.

Design: The structural design was verified through the prototyping process, with tweaks made after Ashley held it in her hands. Through the graphic design process, we were able to incorporate the FSC designation so that educated consumers knew The Good Card was committed to sustainable packaging services.

Production & Delivery: Once order had completed production and shipped, there was a shipping delay that was out of our control. As The Good Card’s trusted packaging services partner, we worked with them every step of the way to ensure we had a backup plan, however we managed to get the product in Ashley’s hands just in time for a big trade show. As we knew the timeline would be tight, we provided detailed assembly instructions that she could share with her whole team to ensure all hands were on deck to get the product into the boxes and on the shelf at their trade show.
